Moscow might seem a strange place to procure a rising hip-hop star…but truth is stranger than fiction. The dynamic, twentysomething Dzham is determined to become Russia's first international hip-hop star. He's off to a good start, having released four full-length albums in his homeland along with a bevy of videos featured on MTV Russia, all the while collaborating with the most famous Russian DJs and artists--all without being signed to any music label. However, Dzham isn't one to give up without a fight. After moving to Moscow from his birthplace of Smolensk as a child, he noticed both the good and bad sides of the Russian way of life: dark suburbs and luxury clubs, family problems and a pervasive criminal atmosphere in his town. All that influenced him to become a rap artist; his self-written lyrics are based on the things that surround him every day. Dzham's arrival on the Russian and European rap scene has marked the beginning of a new era in rap music, with Dzham himself proclaiming that he is about peace not war. His light, soft sound and tunes and distinctive voice, coupled with hints of '90s old school, have all put Dzham in the running as one of the most outstanding and potentially successful new names in rap.
