MUSEXPO W. HOLLYWOOD 2010 EVENT SCHEDULE PREVIEW
The 6th annual MUSEXPO kicks off next month, April 25-28 at the five-star London West Hollywood Hotel in West Hollywood. The confab will bring together some of the most influential executives from around the world who are shaping the future of the global music business. This year’s event will host 30 artists from 14 countries and welcome delegates from three dozen countries on five continents. As always, MUSEXPO focuses on the music first and business is a natural second. “MUSEXPO has always been about those who discover and develop music and those who are helping shape the future of the global music business in a positive and inspiring manner,” says A&R Worldwide and MUSEXPO Founder Sat Bisla.
MUSEXPO organizers intend to keep the event intimate, inspiring and informative; after all, this year’s theme is “inspiration and innovation.” The event will retain a similar ethos to the A&R Worldwide networking dinners started back in 2001, which have inspired many other conferences around the world and are the foundation of what MUSEXPO’s ideology is all about. MUSEXPO brings together executives from the music, media and technology sectors from both within the US and abroad in a personal, interactive and forward–thinking manner. In addition, the conference has organized a stellar lineup of showcasing artists! With already almost 100 A&R and publishing executives from around the world attending this year’s MUSEXPO, the expectations are high for many acts to walk away with tangible outcomes, as well as post-signing success, thanks to the development foundation already in place for many of the showcasing artists. In addition, executives attending the event are in for a treat as the diversity of global attendees and companies to network and do business with are the strongest since MUSEXPO launched back in 2005. MUSEXPO 2010 LOS ANGELES TALENT SPOTLIGHT
An array of top emerging international and US talent is set to arrive in West Hollywood in Los Angeles (the music and entertainment capital of the world) next month for the 6th annual MUSEXPO at the London West Hollywood Hotel. This top tier of unearthed global talent will showcase at the legendary Viper Room and Whisky A Go Go clubs in the heart of the Sunset Strip. Most of the talent is available for signing, licensing, booking, legal representation and/or publishing.
Here’s an overview of some of the international talent that will be showcasing from April 25-28 at the Viper Room and Whisky A Go Go clubs – the full schedule will soon be available at www.musexpo.net.
ALANA LEVANDOSKI (Origin: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada): Alana Levandoski gained the respect, friendship and endorsement of much of the music world with her outstanding debut album, Unsettled Down, released by Rounder Records in 2006. Her name evokes thundering tributes that go far beyond the customary comments made about promising new artists. “I really believe in Alana,” says legendary BBC Radio 2 announcer Bob Harris. “She is part of an emerging generation of new artists who are reflecting the range of influences that makes Canadian music so exciting…Her songs are intelligent, warm and strong.” Reviews of Unsettled Down were plentiful and enthusiastic, with Alana being profiled in numerous UK publications and in such national Canadian magazines as Maclean’s, Chart and Penguin Eggs. She toured the UK and Europe four times, sharing bills with Dar Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Blue Rodeo and Lynn Miles, also venturing across Canada with the Corb Lund Band and additional dates with Stephen Fearing, the Arrogant Worms and Tanya Tucker. These experiences are reflected in her second album, Lions & Werewolves, which was recorded in a hundred year old church in rural Kelwood, Manitoba, and at the upscale Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, England. The album was helmed by British producer Ken Nelson, renowned for his work with Gomez, Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy, Howling Bells and Snow Patrol. Alana Levandoski will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Monday, April 26th at 8:00PM at The Viper Room on Sunset Blvd.
DRAWN FROM BEES (Origin: Brisbane, Australia): Australian art-rockers Drawn From Bees emerged from the ashes of veteran prog-rock outfit Glasshouse in early 2008 when vocalist/guitarist Dan James, bassist/vocalist Stew Riddle, guitarist/vocalist Raven Jones and drummer/vocalist Matt Wedmaier came together over a mutual distaste over Glasshouse’s direction and eventually discarded everything attached to that group, including major label interest and their entire second album, in favor of more honest and open territories. The quartet instead opted to independently write, record and release four records within two years on their own Bonefinger Records, releasing The Boy and the Ocean EP in September 2008, mini-album And the Blind Shall Lead the Way in March 2009 and The Sky is Falling EP in September 2009, with debut full-length Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed scheduled for release in May 2010. While presenting some of the most multi-faceted pop music Brisbane has ever produced, Drawn From Bees has been embraced by tastemakers like Richard Kingsmill (Music Director, Triple J Australia) and performed at mainstream festivals like V Fest and Sounds of Spring. “Despite the early slot, Drawn From Bees have an obvious following as a sturdy crowd arrives for ‘These Philistines,’” noted Time Off Magazine in a V Fest review. “‘'Long Tooth Setting Sun’…ends up being the set stealer and definitely makes them a band of note for the day.” Drawn From Bees will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Sunday, April 25th at 9:30PM Whisky A Go Go on Sunset Blvd.
MIDNIGHT YOUTH (Origin: Auckland, New Zealand): A solid buzz is emanating from Auckland, New Zealand for Midnight Youth, a quintet formed in 2006 consisting of vocalist Jeremy Redmore, guitarist Simon Oscroft, guitarist/keyboardist Nick Campbell, bassist Matt Warman and drummer Aidan Bartlett. Their first two singles achieved Top 40 airplay on New Zealand radio and TV and the group was deemed one of the top unsigned bands on MySpace in 2008. Their self-funded efforts were more than enough to get them noticed, with Warners NZ/Australia signing Midnight Youth in September 2008 and subsequently releasing “The Letter,” which became the No.1 most played song on New Zealand radio and remained in the Top 10 most played for more than 15 weeks. Their next single release, “All on Our Own,” upped the ante, spending 11 weeks as the most played song on New Zealand radio. The debut album The Brave Don’t Run was released in spring 2009 and bowed at No.1 on the iTunes album chart and No.2 on the New Zealand album chart. Midnight Youth closed out 2009 by being nominated for eight New Zealand Music Awards, bringing home the hardware for Best Rock Act, Best Group and Best Engineered Recording. Midnight Youth will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Tuesday, April 27th at 9:30PM Whisky A Go Go on Sunset Blvd.
MADS LANGER (Origin: Jutland, Denmark): Denmark’s Mads Langer is attracting a lot of A&R interest on both sides of the Atlantic. He was signed to respected Scandinavian indie Copenhagen Records, for which he released both his debut album, Attention Please, and 2009’s eponymous follow-up. Langer has already been receiving rave reviews for his commanding stage presence, multi-instrumental ability and keen songwriting sense. BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Davies refers to Langer as “a chilled-out version of Radiohead and Muse,” while Martin Ashplant of www.inthenews.co.uk states, “There is every chance this young man can go much farther than Scandinavia. Soulful and wistful with Muse-like vocals that can tug, Langer…has a chance to take the world by storm.” The first single from Attention Please, “Breaking News,” was immediately given “Hit of the Week” status at influential Danish radio station P3 while also receiving a bevy of American airplay on such tastemaking outlets as KDLD “Indie 103.1” Los Angeles, WKQX “Q101” Chicago, KTCL Denver and KATT Oklahoma City, among others. Still available for signing and licensing worldwide (outside Scandinavia), Langer figures to be a prolific artist: “A minute doesn’t go by, not even a second, without a stream of new musical ideas or familiar phrases running through my head,” he says. “My songs spring from that source.” Mads Langer will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Wednesday, April 28th at 10:00PM The Viper Room on Sunset Blvd.
PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY: (Origin: Sydney, Australia): Philadelphia Grand Jury has always been two friends: Berkfinger and MC Bad Genius. Between these two childhood buddies of some 20 years one observes a strange, tedious and sometimes very complicated relationship that always manages to somehow end up in a smart and ruff pop song. Do they even like each other? No one really knows. The Philly Jays (as their fans affectionately refer to them) are, according to Drum Media, a “must see before you die” band. Their live show has taken them to all corners to play, literally spending more weeks on the road than off. Yet even amidst all of that touring they have managed to squeeze out a self-produced, self-engineered and self-released hit LP on their own label called Normal People Making Hits, which months after release is still sitting pretty in the Top 5 of the independent charts. The LP Hope Is for Hopers has spawned four independent hit tracks and a crossover hit with “The Good News.” Recorded by vocalist/guitarist Berkfinger on a shoestring budget of less than $3,000, Hope Is for Hopers features 12 tracks that capture the raw energy and songwriting prowess that has given the Philly Jays live show the life to turn audiences all over the country on any given night. Philadelphia Grand Jury will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Monday, April 26th at 10:30PM Whisky A Go Go on Sunset Blvd.
SISSY WISH (Origin: Bergen, Norway): Norwegian chanteuse Sissy Wish made her debut with the stunning Six Feet Tall EP in 2003, when she cut four tracks in two days with members of Norway’s eclectic group Sister Sonny. Jangly guitars blended with seasick pianos and the voice of Sissy on top, being a poppy Kate Bush--without the flowery, arty clothes and mannerisms, but with a similar delivery and determination. Never before had an unsigned artist received so much attention from Norwegian radio. Debut album You May Breathe, recorded with legendary Norwegian producer HP Gundersen, is a modern study of the Phil Spector Wall of Sound of the ’60s; re-introducing tambourines, maracas, twang-guitars and lots of background vocals to the Norwegian pop-scene. After releasing her second album Tuning In just 11 months after her debut, Sissy was awarded the Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannsprisen) as the “Best Female Artist” in 2005. Her third album, Beauties Never Die, was recorded in the legendary Duper Studio in Bergen with Norwegian super-producer and whiz-kid Jorgen Traen, best known for his work with Sondre Lerche. The songs are possibly the most daring pieces of music Sissy has ever delivered, filled with complex structures, unexpected arrangements and ultra-catchy melodies, all backed up by hot, pumping drums and basses. Sissy Wish is currently working with the Waterfall camp in Norway, which helped with the initial production of acts such as Ting Tings and Ida Maria prior to their international signings. Sissy Wish will perform at MUSEXPO 2010 in West Hollywood on Monday, April 26th at 10:00PM The Viper Room on Sunset Blvd.

LLOYD WEBBER, UNIVERSAL MUSIC FORGE
NEW PARTNERSHIP IN RECORDING, PUBLISHING
Universal Music Group and Andrew Lloyd Webber have signed long-term global recording and music publishing agreements which renew and expand a long-standing partnership between one of the world’s leading music companies and one of the most successful composers of our time.
Under these new arrangements with Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, Universal Music Group will exclusively distribute and market the composer’s recorded music catalogue in digital and physical formats, and Universal Music Publishing Group will administer and exploit Really Useful’s extensive music publishing interests, including their representation for film, TV, advertising and other mediums.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “I am delighted to have renewed my partnership with Universal Music. They have been wonderful custodians of my music for over three decades, and it is a relationship that I and my colleagues at RUG value most highly. Together we have taken the music around the world, and it is exciting to be announcing this agreement on the eve of our latest collaboration, the Love Never Dies album. I am grateful to my friends, and I really mean friends, at Universal for their loyalty and support over many years, and look forward to working with them in future, especially as we work together to explore the incredible possibilities that digital technologies will bring. ”

The renewed worldwide partnership comes on the eve of the debut of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical. Polydor Records will release the cast recording in March, to coincide with the show’s opening in London’s West End. This will be followed by openings in New York in November 2010 and Australia in 2011, and worldwide release of the album.
Universal Music Publishing Group will represent the music from Love Never Dies and the new deal also extends the worldwide (ex-UK/Eire) publishing agreement for the entire Really Useful Group catalogue.
Universal Music and Andrew Lloyd Webber have enjoyed a successful relationship since the 1970 release of the original Jesus Christ Superstar concept album. The new partnership was negotiated by Jean-François (JF) Cécillon, Vice Chairman, The Really Useful Group; Lucian Grainge, Chairman/CEO, Universal Music Group International; David Renzer, Chairman/CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group and David Joseph, Chairman/CEO, Universal Music UK.
Lucian Grainge stated, “I am personally delighted that we have renewed our commercial and creative association with The Really Useful Group. To have a strategic business partnership with Andrew as well as a personal relationship is one of the things that really makes this business tick.”
JF Cécillon added “Signing simultaneously both the recorded and publishing catalogues to one company is a major development for us. Our strategy is to enhance the asset value of our properties – in particular across all legal digital platforms globally – and clearly, our ability to manage and protect our music, both past and future recordings, is of great importance. We have a strong and supportive relationship with Universal Music, and I’m delighted to cement our partnership for the future.”
David Renzer explained, “We are thrilled to be extending our working relationship with Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Really Useful Group team. Andrew is one of the legends of the theatrical world and of our industry, and we have no doubt that Love Never Dies will continue to build on his legacy and incredible track record.”
Recordings of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work have sold in the tens of millions during the past 40 years. Worldwide sales of The Phantom of the Opera albums alone have exceeded 20 million. His recorded music and music publishing catalogues include such extraordinary properties as Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Cats and Starlight Express.

MUSIC LEADS ON YOUTUBE
According to recent data extracted by research company Sysomos, music is the most popular content that is watched on YouTube. According to the research, it was unveiled that 30.7% of all traffic viewed on the popular video site was contributed to by music. The research company Sysomos also claims that Michael Jackson and the healthcare debate were the two most discussed areas of interest on YouTube based upon measurement of tags that are uploaded for all videos on the popular site.
Of particular interest for the music industry was that the social group embedding and linking to videos were bloggers aged 20-35, accounting for 57.3% of all links. This comes after Vevo (the premium music video channel from YouTube/Google, Universal and Sony) had announced that it was delivering over 30 million streams per day on average in the US alone. THE DYNAMIC SOUND OF SWEDEN’S DYNO
Sweden continues to be a hotbed for musical talent and it’s certainly evident with the eclectic alternative/electronic sounds of the “dynamic” Dyno. The act is based out of Stockholm, Sweden and features Alexander Javelin (vocals/synth), Kim Logan (guitar/synth) and Eugene Logan (bass/synth).
The trio has been writing and recording since 2008 and has been working with the hot production outlet Ten in Sweden. Ten is the same team that helped nurture the already critically acclaimed Erik Hassle. Dyno has created a unique brand of disco-guitar pop-driven electro-rock that the band says is “music that simply makes you warm inside.”
Without a shadow of a doubt Dyno is slated to become one of the most hotly contested A&R bids we’ve seen this year. After all, Dyno knows how to write big melodies and is the kind of act where every track they write could be a hit single, as evidenced by the songs “Destroy, Destroy” and “Don’t Speak Love,” which are already garnering support on the influential tastemaker syndicated international music show Passport Approved.
Adis Adamsson, who manages the band, tells A&R Worldwide that Dyno’s debut album will be released in mid-summer and they have got the world in their sight.
