LARGEST MUSIC INDEPENDENT IN SCANDINAVIA CHANGES NAME
September 1, 2010 will see the largest independent music company in the Nordic territories (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland) change its name from Bonnier Amigo Music Group to Cosmos Music Sweden, Cosmos Music Norway, Cosmos Music Denmark and Cosmos Music Finland, respectively.
The new name follows a number of strategic and structural changes that have been implemented at the region’s leading indie during the past six months. These changes were initiated after the management buy-out, which was completed in December 2009, when Fredrik Ekander, Cai Leitner, Kent Gillström and Christian Drougge bought 100% of the company from previous owner Bonnier AB.
The classic Amigo label (originally launched in 1966) will continue as an active in-house label, while the Bonnier Music imprint will be closed down and its artists, such as pan-European smash hit act Madcon, will move onto the main in-house label Cosmos for all their upcoming releases.
Cosmos Music Group AB is the biggest independent music company in the Nordics with offices in all four major music markets of the region. Its business centers around the signing and developing of Nordic artists and the distribution of music from other independent labels. The company has a long and solid track record of marketing and distributing successful international and local artists in the Nordics, such as Katie Melua, Madcon, Henning Kvitnes, Amy Diamond, Karpe Diem, Hello Saferide, Brolle, Nisse Hellberg, Robyn, Jose Gonzalez, Slipknot, Miss Li, The Refreshments, Sunrise Avenue, BWO, The Paperboys, Ane Brun, Oasis, The Prodigy, Tom Waits, Nickelback, Bettye LaVette, Fleet Foxes, Travis, Black Keys and many more.
The digital division of Cosmos Music Group is called IODA Nordic and through IODA Nordic, local artists and labels will have access to comprehensive digital distribution and targeted, automated marketing services in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland as well as rest of the world.

The One Movement Creative Industries Dialogue (OMCID), presented by One Movement For Music, is a chance for creators, their representatives, technologists, media and community leaders from creative industries around Australia to get together in one place, at one time to discuss the exciting opportunities - and some of the challenges - that the world of convergence now offers us all.
On Wednesday, October 6 at The Parmelia Hilton, artists, creators, representatives, major industry bodies, technology companies, government agencies and the media will participate in presentations, panels, interviews and networking sessions designed to examine a variety of issues. OMCID will enable attendees to interact with other industries, to keep their members informed, focus on export and local income benefits and grow their businesses.
One of the binding forces of the creative industries is the ability to utilize music in their works and products. This association with music makes OMFM a natural fit to host such an important event and to welcome delegates to also attend the MUSEXPO Asia Pacific business conference over the following days.
Currently confirmed as panellists for OMCID are Troy Carter (Founder, Chairman and CEO of the Coalition Media Group, the worldwide manager for Lady Gaga), Eloise Nolan (Rightsholder Relationship Manager, Copyright Agency Ltd, Aust), Fergus Linehan (Edinburgh Festival & Sydney Opera House, Aust), Adrianne Pecotic (AFACT – Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft), Brett Cottle (CEO, APRA, Australia), Amy Broadfoot (Future Shorts/Amičko Films, Aust), Jacqui Allen (Deputy Director Department Culture and the Arts WA), Ian Booth (Chief Exec, ScreenWest, Aust), Marcus Canning (Director, CEO - ARTRAGE Inc, Aust) and copyright lawyers Sonia Sharma and Brendan Coady (Maddocks Lawyers, Aust), with more to be announced shortly.
The recently confirmed participants will join other music industry luminaries already announced, including Todd Rundgren (hit singer/songwriter and producer), Ron Spaulding (President, Fontana Distribution – the leading independent distribution arm for Universal Music Group), Gary Chen (Founder, co-Chairman/CEO, Orca Digital/Top 100, China – Google’s music partner in China), Thomas Scherer (Head of Int’l Repertoire, BMG Rights Management, Germany); Mandar Thakur (Founder, MT Consulting, India); Ande MacPherson (General Manager, George FM & Kiwi FM, New Zealand), Mike Walsh (Head of Music, Xfm UK – one of Europe’s leading tastemaker radio networks), Spek Hussain Yoosef (Managing Director, Fairwood Music Arabia & Middle East) and Australians Richard Kingsmill (Music Director, Triple J) and Damian Trotter (Managing Director, Sony/ATV Music Publishing Australia) and many others to be announced in the next few days.
Last year’s event attracted hundreds of international influencers to Perth for One Movement for Music and MUSEXPO Asia Pacific, including Coldplay manager Dave Holmes, one of the world’s greatest songwriters Diane Warren, Eminem and Ting Tings booking agent Steve Strange and many others. In addition, the event brought together for the very first time leading emerging talent from Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, US, Canada, Germany, UK and many other countries.

GOOGLE CONTINUES MUSIC HEAD SEARCH
Google continues to move forward with plans to launch its music service, said to be targeted for launch in early 2011. Andy Rubin, VP, Android is said to have accelerated talk with a music industry group publishing firm in hopes of gaining digital publishing rights to as many songs as possible to enable the launch of a Google Music Store. Rubin is also said to have had conversations with the Harry Fox Agency, which has indicated that Google is ready to accelerate its music store initiative to the next stage.
CNET has reported that Google is on the hunt for someone to lead the music venture.
Citing industry sources, CNET writes, “the blog ‘All Things Digital’ reported that Google has spoken to several digital-media executives about the job, but hasn’t hired anyone yet. Those same sources now say that the launch of any Google music store may be pushed back to the first quarter of 2011.”
Some of the names said to be on the list include former AOL Content Head Bill Wilson, Lala.com Founder Billy Alvarado, Hearst Ent’t & Syndication VP George Kliavkoff (a force behind Hulu) and the soon to be departing Clear Channel Executive VP Online Music-Radio Evan Harrison.

PLEDGE MUSIC TO LAUNCH IN AUSTRALIA
PledgeMusic (www.pledgemusic.com), the leading international direct-to-fan platform, will launch in Australia on September 8, 2010.
PledgeMusic has already facilitated the funding of its first Australian artist on the platform via a recent campaign for West Australian Emily Barker and The Red Clay Halo. Barker and her team raised in excess of $7000 AUD (£4000 GBP) in 60 days to fund the marketing of their new album Almanac, which is currently being recorded in London.
PledgeMusic has also engaged Mark Muggeridge of Australian consultancy Evil Genius Media to work with Australian artists and their management teams to help them understand how to get the most from their PledgeMusic campaigns. Muggeridge has also been charged with identifying opportunities that will benefit the Australian music community via the PledgeMusic platform.
Benji Rogers said, “Whilst in Australia recently I was so impressed with how artists Down Under are taking their music carriers into their own hands and at how forward-thinking the music business there seems to be. We really feel that PledgeMusic can be a great option for both signed and unsigned acts in Australia and are ready to lend our support wherever we can.”

VIRTUALLYINTERNATIONAL MUSIC
ARTIST: Karoshi Bros
SONG: “Not Sitting”
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: England
LABEL: Suitcase
AVAILABLE FOR: signing, licensing, booking
WEB: www.karoshimusic.com
CONTACT: info@anrworldwide.com
Karoshi Bros. are two brothers from Newcastle, England who make electronic pop music. They are known to feature quirky vocalists and enlist some of the best up-and-coming remixers to spice up their tracks. They have described their music as “CSS meeting Human League at a warehouse party” and believe it or not, that’s an accurate description. Music Week has given them a favorable review, stating that Karoshi Bros are “Super catchy, slightly twisted dance-pop that leaves a lasting impression on the listener. Repeat listener appeal” with a 5/5 rating. Their latest single, “Not Sitting” will keep you on your feet with the original, but you also have many remix choices including mixes from Mr Fogg and Cassette Jam. Karoshi Bros. have garnered strong support from the syndicated international new music show Passport Approved, which helped them get noticed by EA Games and procure a synch license for their song “Love Da World” back in 2007.
ARTIST: Mexicolas
SONG: “Bright Sparks”
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: England
LABEL: In Exile Records
AVAILABLE FOR: signing, licensing, publishing
WEB: www.themexicolas.com
CONTACT: Steve Skelding steveskelding@inexilerecords.com
Mexicolas are not, in fact, a new type of South of the Border soft drink…rather; they’re an exciting new act from Birmingham, England. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jamie Evans’ impassioned vocals have drawn comparisons to Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, head Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, while the sound of the band as a whole has been compared to everyone from Stone Temple Pilots and Green Day to Nickelback. In 2006 the group was featured in a Channel 4 (UK) documentary titled “4-Play,” which followed the band as they recorded and resided together in a warehouse. Their infectious single, “Come Clean,” was included in EA Games title Burnout 5, which was released in 2008. Their sophomore album, The Minerva Suite, was released in June and features the ready-for-radio track “Bright Sparks.” Jim Gellatly, formerly of Xfm, included Mexicolas in a recent podcast, stating, “Mexicolas’ fabulous new album The Minerva Suite is just packed with anthemic Indie Rock gems and is required listening.”
ARTIST: The Good Natured
SONG: “Be My Animal”
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: England
LABEL: unsigned
AVAILABLE FOR: signing, licensing, booking (various territories)
WEB: www.myspace.com/thegoodnatured
CONTACT: Simon Bobbett simon@sb-management.com
Eighteen-year-old Sarah McIntosh from Berkshire is best known to her fans as The Good Natured. After salvaging her grandmother’s 1980s Yamaha keyboard, she self-produced her 2009 debut EP, Warriors, which contained four songs, each of them electro-pop gems showing a total understanding of the genre’s nuances; she arrives as a compelling new talent. Her second EP, Your Body is a Machine, was released on Rough Trade and contained remixes from Baby Monster, Aspirins for My Children and Radioproof. Her latest single, “Be My Animal,” is scheduled for release in October and is a good indication that this new artist is here to stay for the long haul.

INDUSTRY LEADERS TO UNITE FOR THE GOOD OF MUSIC
Music National Service (MNS), a national nonprofit movement which supports music as a strategy for public good, will team up with A&R Worldwide for a gathering of top music industry minds for the common good of music. A&R Worldwide President/Founder Sat Bisla will work with MNS CEO Kiff Gallagher and Kevin Wall, CEO, Control Room (which has put on worldwide music events such as Live Earth, Live 8, FIFA World Cup 2010 opening music ceremony in South Africa and many others) in bringing together key leaders in the US music business for a think-tank dinner in mid-September in Los Angeles to support the health and creativity of music in America through the MNS organization.
MNS recently launched a domestic “musical Peace Corps” called MusicianCorps in four cities – SF/Oakland Bay Area, Chicago, New Orleans and Seattle – where twenty MusicianCorps Fellows serve full-time in public schools, parks and recreation centers, children’s and veteran's hospitals, public housing communities and elsewhere in return for a living stipend, health benefits and professional development.
MusicianCorps recruits, trains and places musicians in high-need settings in order to strengthen communities, develop 21st century skills (like teamwork, discipline, perseverance, risk-taking, critical thinking, etc.) and spread music wherever music can reach, teach or heal.
MNS has strong support in Washington, DC from a number of bi-partisan members of Congress and the US Senate including congressional supporters Rep. Joe Crowley, Chairman Rep. George Miller and Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Judd Gregg. The organization is spearheaded by CEO Kiff Gallagher, who worked in the White House with former US President Bill Clinton and has been instrumental in bringing the essential message and good will of Music National Service across America.

A cross mix of local and international writers from as far afield as the US and Australia and a wild card entry will be writing songs for four days, helping maintain a healthy vibe between German songwriters and their international counterparts. The aim of organizers Paul DH Baylay, Sandra Mynheer and Christian Behrens is to provide a creative platform for all writers, both foreign and domestic.
Bahar Tozman, Vice President EMI Music Publishing GmbH, said, “The Berlin Song Summit is the perfect addition to Berlin Music Week. In our industrial sector everything is about the right song - what would be more obvious than arranging a Songwriter Camp in the center of the music-event? A great initiative of the organizers.”
Ingo Heinzmann, Senior Director A&R Creative Universal Music Publishing, explains, “An A-Class-Songwriter Camp like the Berlin Song Summit, in a city like Berlin with the demand to be THE creative Metropole of Europe, has been missing until now. To get involved with the Berlin Song Summit with its excellent team was for Universal Music Publishing a natural step. We hope this event becomes an institution and we look forward to many great and exciting songs.”
