Pelle Lidell & Robin Jenssen
In cooperation with the Korean label SM Entertainment, and its recently-launched sister company, Culture Technology Group Asia (CTGA Co Ltd), Swedish music publishing veteran Pelle Lidell, alongside Norwegian business partner Robin Jenssen, have launched EKKO Music Rights Europe, a new independent music publishing company. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, EKKO will seek to be an active force within the global music publishing market. EKKO is the result of a long-standing idea from Korean leading music business executive Soo Man Lee who is also the Founder and Chairman of successful music entertainment firm, SM Entertainment Co.

In Sweden, EKKO will be led by business partners Lidell (President & Co-Founder) and Jenssen (VP/GM & Co-Founder) with Lidell overseeing the company’s daily operations. An office and recording studio will also be set-up in Los Angeles in cooperation with veteran producer/writer/executive, Dominique Rodriguez. In Seoul, EKKO Music Rights will be overseen by SM Entertainment’s Creative Chief and Head of A&R, Chris Lee (CEO) with music publishing veteran Johan Chung (GM) managing the Seoul office’s daily activities. Additional expansion for the company is expected in the near future.

For most of 2016 Lidell and Jenssen have been behind the scenes on setting up the company’s strategies and future activities but during that time have also managed to place more than 300 songs for release globally resulting in 5 No.1 records to date. One of them including “Vente Pa’Ca,” Latin pop icon Ricky Martin’s hit single for Sony Music which has reached the No.1 spot in no less than 14 countries, as well as the No.1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Airplay, Latin Hot Songs and Tropical Airplay charts. The record has reached multi-platinum sales and garnered more than 140 million Spotify streams as well as over 650 million views on YouTube.

Additional signings include Dsign Music, the highly successful Norwegian songwriting/production team whose work has exceeded the 20 million mark in worldwide sales with more than 200 songs recorded and released. Dsign’s releases include 23 Billboard World Chart No.1’s as well as a number of other No.1’s and Top 5’s globally. Last month, EKKO also signed a worldwide sub-publishing/administration deal with Kobalt Music (ex-Japan and Korea).

Pelle Lidell tells A&R Worldwide, “In the noughties, during my time with Universal Music Publishing UK, I began to do great business with Soo Man Lee, Chris Lee and SM Entertainment’s brilliant A&R team. Since then we’ve strengthened our relationship through our ongoing collaborations. Their cutting-edge 2.0 approach have gob-smacked me numerous times and my writers and I have enjoyed endless hit records and multi-million sales thanks to SM Entertainment’s extraordinary work. So, when they asked me in the fall of 2015 if I was interested in teaming up with them to launch the European arm of a brand new music publishing company, I didn’t hesitate for a second. Furthermore, I’m delighted that my old friend and colleague Robin Jenssen is joining me on this journey - he’s by far one of the best music business entrepreneurs I’ve ever worked with. We complete each other with our different set of skills. We have also secured the services of an international A&R consultant with a truly impressive network and a history of hits. That person’s name will be revealed shortly. I realize that it’s still early days for us but I’m totally convinced that EKKO will reach the goals we’ve set up: to be a globally proactive, creative and writer/artist-friendly independent music publishing company that writers and artists would want to sign with. I have had the pleasure of working in both independent and major environments so we at EKKO will try our hardest to combine the best of these both worlds. With a worldwide deal in place with Kobalt Music, a music publishing company I’m a huge fan of, I truly believe we have all the tools to provide the best service possible to our writers.”

New York Mayor, Bill de Blasio and Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin revealed last week results of the first-ever economic impact study of New York City’s music industry. Conducted by Boston Consulting Group, the study found that the sector supports nearly 60,000 jobs, accounts for $5 billion in wages, and generates $21 billion in total economic output for the city. The music industry also sits as the fastest growing sector of the local economy with music-related jobs and wages increasing at annual rates of 4% and 7% respectively. The growth is being driven by the mass music consumption segment consisting of major venues, large-scale performances, digital streaming, radio broadcasts and retailers. With jobs and wages in the segment growing at 5% and 12% respectively, it contributes almost 50% of all direct economic output. The study also revealed that New York City is a hub for digital music innovation and services with more than 70 digital music start-ups based in the city, twice as many as in either San Francisco or Los Angeles. New York City also boasts more live music ticket sales than any other city in the world at 5.4 million in 2015. For the full report findings click HERE.

Born and raised in Sweden, Andreas Moss barely had a chance to choose music; rather, he inherited the family business. His parents, like theirs before them, were traveling musicians—barely into his teens, Moss became a multi-faceted collaborator; a Swiss Army man of many talents, ghostwriting and directing music videos and short films for a growing community of artists. The 28-year old’s solo outings really channel the extremes of his homeland; hook-heavy music that reveals a muse born from a a certain darkness. His debut single, “Thinking About You,” instantly connected with people. He’s earned nearly 2 million global streams, over 270k monthly listeners on Spotify and the music video is quickly approaching 1 million views. Currently residing in Nashville, Andreas Moss is a dreamer, a poet, a singer and if “Thinking About You” is any indication of what’s to come from the upcoming Linnea (Curb) album, the sky's the limit. Listen to “Thinking About You” HERE and contact Jono Scarlet jono@mintmusic.co for publishing opportunities and John Butler jbutler@curb.com for additional inquiries.

She sings, she raps and her swag is undeniable. She has racked up over 80k fans on Facebook, nearly 20k on Instagram, and a whopping 13 million multi-platinum views. Ms. Williams is a force to be reckon with. A native from the Bay Area, Ms. Williams, born Jenae Williams, is the youngest of three siblings. The daughter of musicians, she was surrounded by rock, pop, jazz and hip hop, and influenced by artists ranging from Fleetwood Mac to 2Pac. At the age of 10 she started writing her own verses. Ms. Williams grew up a tomboy and idolized her older brothers Jason and Justin, who encouraged her creative pursuits. They would not allow her to enter their room until she wrote a verse and performed it from outside of the door. This frequent routine tightened her pen and entertaining skills. Ms. Williams moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 after her brother died in a tragic car accident. Unable to reconcile this life event, she threw herself into music, the only outlet that she found motional healing. This young musician has an abundant load of fantastic energy, a great attitude and an outstanding voice. You can experience Ms. Williams in the NSFW video for “Fuck You Right Back” HERE.
