PRIMARY WAVE MUSIC SIGNS DEAL
WITH ICONIC ARTIST CHRIS ISAAK



Primary Wave Music has unveiled a partnership with critically acclaimed American musician, Chris Isaak. Terms of the deal will see the publishing giant acquire a 50% stake in the Grammy-nominated singer’s master recordings. The multi-million-dollar acquisition encompasses Isaak’s biggest hits across his decades long career including, “Blue Hotel,” “San Francisco Days,” “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing,” “Somebody’s Crying,” as well as his globally renowned hit song “Wicked Game.”

“Wicked Game” became a Top 10 hit in the US and has since been featured in a number of films, television shows and advertisements. The Herb Ritts’ directed video, featuring Helena Christensen, fueled the song’s popularity and won multiple MTV Video Music Awards including “Best Male Video.” It was also included on VHI’s 100 Great Videos and Rolling Stone’s 100 Top Music Videos. In 2019, the single was introduced to a new audience after it was covered on the 17th season premiere of NBC’s The Voice. That performance helped land “Wicked Game” the top slot on Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart.

Additional terms of the deal include a strategic alliance with the singer that will allow Isaak to sign new artists to a joint venture, as well as a recording contract with Sun Records which was recently acquired by Primary Wave Music. Moving forward, Isaak will release new material on the legendary label.

WARNER CHAPPELL GERMANY INKS GLOBAL DEAL
WITH SONGWRITER & INFLUENCER KATJA KRASAVICE

German artist Katja Krasavice has signed a global publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. The singer-songwriter is the first female rapper to enjoy back-to-back No.1 albums in Germany. This year, Krasavice achieved a No.1 with her album Eure Mami, a No.1 with her single “Highway,” as well as No.1 with her remix of Saweetie’s “Best Friend.”

Krasavice first came into the music scene after posting cover videos on YouTube in 2014, before going on to release her debut single “Doggy” in 2017, which climbed to No.7 on the German charts.

In 2019, she signed a recording deal with Warner Music Germany and released her debut album, Boss Bitch the following year, which hit No.1 and contained the singles “Gucci Girl,” “Sugar Daddy,” “Wer Sind Sie” and “Casino.” Her second album, Eure Mami released this year, included the hit German chart singles “Million Dollar A$$ (feat. Fler),” “Ich She,” “Alles Scon Haben,” “Highway (feat. Elif)” and “Friendzone.” This past April, Krasavice was featured on a remix of Saweetie and Doja Cat’s ‘Best Friend’, which reached No. 1 on the German singles chart.

Krasavice has built a significant following on social media across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with some 2.7 million followers on Instagram, 1.6 million on TikTok and 185 million views on YouTube. She’s also the bestselling author of The Bitch Bible, her autobiography which was published in 2020.


UMPG LAUNCHES NEW DIVISION IN ISRAEL

Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has announced the immediate launch and opening of its Israel division, UMPG Israel. UMPG will be the only major music publishing company with an office in the burgeoning territory, providing dedicated on-the-ground support for its world-class roster of songwriters and will discover, sign and develop Israeli music creators.

Itamar Shafrir, a 20-year music veteran has been appointed UMPG Israel’s General Manager, Publishing and Production Music. He reports dually to Simon Baker, General Manager of UMPG Europe Publishing, and Michael Sammis, President of Universal Production Music worldwide. In addition to his service in various music roles in New York, Tel Aviv and London, Shafrir worked in film and television for 12 years and held leadership roles at UMG sister company Havas London.

The company says that the launch of UMPG in Israel will drive new opportunities both for UMPG’s global and domestic songwriters within Israel’s vibrant entertainment, media, and technology communities among others.


ATLANTIC RECORDS UK & ADA PARNTER WITH
LATIN LABEL CANDELA RECORDS




Warner Music Group based companies Atlantic Records UK and Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA), have signed a partnership deal with Candela Records, which is a newly created UK-Latin based record label. The agreement will be the first time that a UK-based frontline label has teamed-up with a Latino label in the UK according to Austin Daboh, Executive Vice President, Atlantic Records, UK.

Candela Records was co-founded by Luciano Santana Pinto and Jose Luis Seijas and is a part of the company’s brand of Latin culture via Latino Life. In addition, the company publishes Latino Life Magazine and organizes events and manages social media channels. Under the new venture, Seijas will overseeing Candela Records operations, Pinto will take on the role as of Head of A&R and Amaranta Wright, Founder & Editor, Latino Life Magazine will assume the role of Head of Communications.

As a part of the agreement Atlantic Records UK and ADA will assist Candela Records in signing and developing new acts, as well as providing global distribution services for its current roster of talent. Atlantic Records UK has also announced a deal with Dublin-based Trust It Entertainment, which is home to some of Ireland’s leading rap, hip-hop and drill artists. A&R Worldwide also understands that Atlantic Records UK is keen to sign one of its early-championed British singer/songwriting talents, who has global A&R signing interest.

HE PREFERS TO FLY WITH CONCORD: Concord Music Publishing has announced the signing of renowned DJ and producer Imanbek to a new worldwide publishing deal. The Kazakhstan-born creative has racked-up over two billion streams in total for his various releases on Spotify, making him one of the Top 100 most streamed artists on the platform. Imanbek’s manager Kirill Dzham, a former A&R Worldwide client from the Russian Federation and an artist himself stated, “Over the last year, Imanbek has received offers from different publishers, but only the team at Concord made it really solid and concrete when it came to cooperation and finding the right approach to Imanbek’s requirements as producer.” Songs included as part of the deal include collaborations with 24kGoldn, Marshmello, Usher, Fetty Wap, Khea and Gunna. Earlier this year, Imanbek collaborated with Rita Ora on a four-song EP titled Bang. The lead single “Big” featured rapper Gunna and David Guetta.

COMING BACK TO LIVE: Michael Rapino, CEO & President, Live Nation Entertainment has announced that the US concert business is “fully open” during his recent interview on CNBC last week. In the US, Live Nation has seen a buoyant reopening of the live business since post-pandemic restrictions were lifted. Rapino stated he was particularly excited about the American and UK markets, as both territories represent almost 70 percent of their live business this year. This includes 30 full capacity amphitheater shows in the US, including the Miami, FL-based Rolling Loud Festival that will draw 200,000 attendees to its event. Live Nation has also said that it will have an extremely busy 2022, as many of its major tours for next year have increased by double-digits from its pre-pandemic levels in 2019 – with 2023 looking even stronger for its worldwide live business.

THIS PUBLISHING AGREEMENT IS A WRAP: Warner Chappell Music, has signed a worldwide publishing deal with pioneering UK rapper and songwriter Wretch 32, which covers future works, plus his back catalogue. Wretch 32 gained mainstream attention in 2011 with his single “Traktor” from his second studio album Black and White. The track charted at No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart, while the album charted at No.4 and produced the number No.2 single “Unorthodox” and the chart topping “Don’t Go.” He’s since released three more albums, including the Top 5 Growing Over Life, and two more Top 10 hits. It was also announced earlier this year that Wretch 32 had joined the UK imprint of Def Jam - 0207 Def Jam as the label’s Creative Director.

WONDERGURL GETS NEW ENERGY WITH JV: Red Bull Records has secured a partnership deal with acclaimed producer, songwriter, and music executive Ebony ‘WondaGurl’ Oshunrinde and her label imprint, Wonderchild. The news of the new partnership follows WondaGurl’s history-making win at the 2021 Juno Awards in Canada, where she became the first Black woman to receive the Jack Richardson “Producer of the Year Award.” The first deal of its kind for Red Bull Records, will see WondaGurl work alongside Red Bull Records executives Greg Hammer, Managing Director and Kenny ‘Tick’ Salcido, Senior VP / Head of A&R to sign fresh, exciting new talent. Toronto rapper JUGGER will serve as the first artist to sign to the label, with his full-length project executive produced by WondaGurl out later this year.

EXPANDING FURTHER INTO SOUTH AMERICA: Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced the launch of Virgin Music Label & Artist Services Brazil. The new set-up will be guided by music industry veteran Miguel Cariello who has been named General Manager, Virgin Music Label & Artist Services, Brazil. Since 2017, Cariello had been Content and GTS Director for Universal Music Brazil and prior to that served the music industry with experiences as digital marketing manager, artist manager, as well as artistic and event producer. Virgin Music Label & Artist Services Brazil has also announced that it has partnered with the Brazilian-based Sertanejo label, Work Show. Since launching in 2007, Work Show has garnered over 35 billion views on YouTube, racked-up over 100 million followers on social media platforms, received multiple awards, and hosted thousands of events worldwide including within Brazil. Well-known Sertanejo duo Henrique & Juliano are the first new signing under this new partnership.

PUTTING HIS ARTIST FIRST: Well-known UK music industry veteran Charlie Rapino has taken on a new role as Vice President, International & Communications, Artist First, which is an Italian-based record label and distribution company based in Milan. Rapino who has been a consultant to the company since 2016, will continue to be based in London and take on A&R and talent acquisition responsibilities as well as oversee international communications for the company. Artist First, which as launched in 209 by Claudio Ferrante currently employees over 50 staff in hits main hub in Italy. Rapino who has held numerous A&R consultancy positions at various companies including Sony, Polydor and Decca was also previously one half of the well-known dance production duo called The Rapino Brothers.

ATLANTIC RECORDS SIGNS AUSTRALIAN TEEN: Sydney, Australia’s new emerging teen pop sensation MAY-A (real name Maya Cumming) has signed a worldwide record deal with Atlantic Records, which covers all territories except Australia and New Zealand, which will be overseen by Sony Music Australia. MAY-A began writing songs at 12 years-old and honed her chops performing live while busking around Australia. She’s just released her brand-new single “Swing Of Things,” (featuring Powfu) a few days ago, which will be feature on her new debut EP, Don’t Kiss Your Friends, scheduled for release on Atlantic Records on August 6th 2021. Earlier this year, Atlantic Records also signed Australian teen Mia Rodriquez, with the support of A&R Worldwide who introduced her music to a senior A&R executive at the company.

AN ICONIC ROCK N ROLL DEAL: Sony Music Publishing today announced its worldwide deal with Sydney, Australia-based independent music company Alberts. The agreement is to administer the complete song catalogues of iconic Rock & Roll band AC/DC and renowned songwriting/producing team Harry Vanda, George Young and Stevie Wright. AC/DC is one of the most celebrated rock bands who have had global success with their timeless hits such as “Highway to Hell,” “Back in Black,” “Thunderstruck,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” and “TNT.” The historic deal brings the band’s publishing and recording rights together under the Sony banner for the first time. The catalogues of the legendary songwriting and producing team Vanda, Young and Wright include classics like “Friday on my Mind” and “Good Times” by The Easybeats, as well as “Love is in the Air,” “Yesterday’s Hero” and “Standing in the Rain” performed by John Paul Young.

SIGNING A LEGEND: Warner Chappell Music has entered into a worldwide administration agreement with the estate of Cab Calloway, the pioneering jazz vocalist, songwriter, entertainer, actor and author. The deal includes classics such as “Minnie the Moocher,” “Are You All Reet?” and “Are You Hep to the Jive? (Yas, Yas)”. In a career that spanned over 65 years, Calloway inspired generations of performers, among them James Brown and Michael Jackson, while laying the groundwork for what would become hip-hop music and culture decades later. Among his many firsts, Calloway was the first black artist to sell a million records, with the 1931 release of “Minnie the Moocher,” known for its indelible “hi de ho” chorus.

AUSSIE A&R BUZZ ACT SECURES MANAGEMENT: Dan Zilber, A&R/Manager, Future Classic Australia has taken on management for the hotly tipped Australian buzz artist Jacob Biermann. The talented 16-year-old singer/songwriter from the Gold Coast of Australia has had offers from all the major labels in Australia but continues to remain independent (for now). The teen released his new single “Red” at the start of this month, which is the follow-up to his D.I.Y. debut release “My Kingdom,” which currently has over 1.25M streams on Spotify. Zilber tells A&R Worldwide, “We're planning to release another 5 songs in the coming months with an EP in Jan 2022.”

STAYING UNIQUE WITH NEW SIGNINGS: B-Unique, a leading independent British music publisher has announced a raft of new signings which include Rob Harvey, the lead singer/songwriter for the band The Music. Harvey has co-written multi-Platinum UK hits for Joel Corry, MNEK, Harlee, Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne, as well as records for Rudimental, Jax Jones, Tom Walker, James Hype, MK and Digital Farm Animals. Harvey also has upcoming singles with Harlee, Ella Henderson and Shane Codd. He’s also currently in the studio working with Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs and The Streets, as well as writing with Zara Larsson and Nathan Dawe. B-Unique has also finalized a joint publishing agreement with Adam Midgley (Dua Lipa, Avicii, Grace Carter, Kungs, Raye and Little Mix) and Ashley Sykes of 1234 Music, whose first signing is Josef Page (a songwriter/producer). Since first launching in 2001, by co-Founders Mark Lewis and Martin Toher, B-Unique has been a part of 100 million album sales, 20 billion streams and numerous No.1 singles for both masters and publishing.

RAMPING UP ITS TEAM: FUGA has announced the hiring of Gareth Mellor as their new Global Head, B2B Marketing. In addition, the company has confirmed the hiring of Connie Chow as Marketing Strategy Manager, Dance/Electronic Music and Greg Vegas as Director, Client Relations Americas. Mellor who was hired back in January of this year as Head of TuneCore, UK will oversee FUGA’s corporate brand development as well as the responsibility of defining and executing FUGA’s global product marketing strategy.

BMG LOVES ITS SUEDE: English rock band Suede have expanded their global partnership with BMG, adding recordings to their long-standing publishing agreement. Since 2013, BMG have represented the interests of Suede songwriters Brett Anderson, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling. As one of the biggest names in the Brit-Pop revolution, Suede scored eight Top 10 singles and three No.1 albums in the UK. Their 1993 self-titled debut album became one of the fastest-selling debut albums in almost ten years. Suede have confirmed that they are currently recording new music and want their fans to play a part in the process. They’ve invited listeners to submit a voice recording following detailed instructions shared on their official Facebook page.

TURNING A CORNER IN INDIA: Kobalt Music Publishing has become the first international publisher to sign with The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) since its re-induction into the Confederation of International Societies of Authors & Composers (CISAC) in 2016. Three standalone international music publishers including Kobalt Music Publishing, Fairwood Music Group and Konic Records entered the Indian market via sub-publishing agreements last year with Atul Churamani, Managing Director, Turnkey Music & Publishing Pvt. Ltd. IPRS will administer both the performing and mechanical rights of the international catalogues signed to it, which means that all rights licensed to audio streaming services, FM and AM radio and public performance can be licensed in totality. For sync licenses for television and OTT audio-visual platforms, publishers will continue to issue licenses while the users will get the mechanical and performing licenses from IPRS. Once other international publishers are on board, IPRS can close deals with platforms that have been unable to license international publishing to date.

HITTING HIGHER CAREER NOTES: Warner Chappell Music (WCM), recently appointed Jenni Pfaff to Sr. Vice President, Head of Global Strategic Integration & Operations. In addition, Jesse Dang has joined as Sr. Vice President of People, supporting Warner Chappell. Pfaff will report to Guy Moot, Co-Chair & CEO and Carianne Marshall, Co-Chair & COO and will serve as an adviser and change agent, ensuring that the company’s global business priorities and strategic initiatives are successfully implemented. In addition, she will work closely with senior management to support cross-functional projects and help to identify ways to create efficiencies and synergies across the business. Dang will report to Masha Osherova, EVP & Chief People Officer, WMG and will focus on executing Warner Chappell’s People agenda across the company’s U.S., Europe, Latin America and Asia territories, as well as provide HR counsel and support to the publisher’s leadership team.

LEGAL BEAGLES: Bernard Max Resnick, Esq tells A&R Worldwide that his clients Diontae Bennett and Damien Styles whose song “American Paranoid Freak,” which has been making huge headway on TikTok, have signed a joint venture agreement with Elliott Grainge’s 10K Projects. The deal sees Damien's recordings being released and promoted by 10K Projects, whereas Dropout Klub will also be a source of new artists for the joint venture. Danielle Price and Blake Brown-Grakal represented 10K Projects in negotiating and drafting the deal with Resnick.

A VIRTUAL NEW ARTIST REALITY: Newly launched London, England-based music start-up Soundr have announced that they will only sign interactive virtual acts, who will exist exclusively as avatars in the metaverse. The company is founded by artist manager John Black (Sandi Thom, Cher Lloyd) and Ivor Novello award winning songwriter Pete Kirtley. The first act to go through Soundr’s new signing process is Skullz - a three-piece emo-pop girl group. Fans will be able to collect micro-NFTs in the form of in-game wearables, exclusive content, and virtual VIP experiences, as well as new-generation alternatives to unaffordable concert tickets and merch. Kirtley tells A&R Worldwide, “By structuring Soundr as a blockchain, AI and virtual world start-up, the result is a more democratic music label for Gen-Z, where fans have greater autonomy over the music artists they engage with.” Soundr currently has four other virtual acts in development and seeks to build a roster across a myriad of genres.

NO LONGER UNDER A ROCK: Black Rock has unveiled a co-publishing partnership with Electric Ibiza – one of Ibiza’s biggest events, label and artist management companies. Black Rock is a part of Sentric Music Group’s Electronic division and provides a concierge publishing service and expertise to some of the genre’s leading artists, managers and labels. Electric Ibiza manages a host of well-known DJs and producers, including Sidney Charles, Seb Zito, Prok & Fitch, Ray Mono, Marco Faraone and East End Dubs, as well as a growing list of successful labels which include Heavy House Society, Edible and Seven Dials Records – and event brands such as Do Not Sleep, Cuckooland and Epic Pool Parties. As part of the deal, Electric Ibiza’s new publishing operation will receive support from Black Rock and Sentric’s administration infrastructure, creative and sync teams.

TRADING PLACES: Songtradr recently announced the expansion of their Global Creative division, which is being led by music industry veteran, Amanda Schupf. Schupf has been tapped as Sr. VP of Global Creative and will oversee artist and label services, music programming and curation, as well as Songtradr’s original music initiative. With development of this new division, Songtradr has made its first key hire under Schupf, tapping former Spotify Nashville and Curb Records executive John Butler as Head of Music Programming and Curation. In her new role, Schupf will establish and lead Songtradr’s global creative strategy across the Songtradr product ecosystem, with a focus on establishing, developing and overseeing key creative teams in the three sectors of the Global Creative division. Meanwhile, Butler will create programming strategies that result in meaningful growth and adoption of Songtradr products, including Pretzel, which provides stream-safe music for live streamers.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL WITH DIGITAL: 7digital, a leading provider of end-to-end digital music solutions, has unveiled that global fitness brand Barry’s and Barcelona’s Volava have become new clients of its music platform as a service, which is being utilized by a fast-growing number of fitness companies including London’s Apex Rides, a cutting-edge high-performance smart bike and in-home fitness platform, and Los Angeles-based FORME, a premium home fitness system that delivers a one-on-one fitness experience through full-length mirrors that transform into immersive personal training studios. 7digital already powers some of the largest social and music platforms like Kuaishou, Moodagent and Triller amongst others.

PUTTING ON HIS NEW RAINCOAT WITH RESERVOIR: Renowned producer, composer and artist John Parish has signed a global deal with Blue Raincoat Music Publishing/Reservoir encompassing all of John’s multi-dimensional work across his 25-year career. Since the mid-90s John has worked with a range of artists, while also writing for film, stage and TV. He collaborated on five PJ Harvey albums, co-producing and featuring on the Mercury Award-winning Let England Shake and Mercury-nominated To Bring You My Love, and also co-writing and performing on Dance Hall At Louse Point and A Woman A Man Walked By. Most recently, John produced London-based band Dry Cleaning’s debut album, New Long Leg, which topped the UK Independent Albums chart and reached No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart. Other productions include Aldous Harding, Sparklehorse, Tracy Chapman, Giant Sand, This Is The Kit and the EelsSouljacker, on which he also co-wrote. He has also created award-winning scores for many independent movies including Patrice Toye’s Rosie and Little Black Spiders, Ursula Meier’s L’Enfant D’en Haut and Nathalie Teirlinck’s Le Passé Devant Nous. Blue Raincoat Music Publishing/Reservoir have also signed emerging artists Elanor Moss and HighSchool to their roster.

THERE’S MONDAY, THEN TUESAY: Australasian-based independent music publisher Native Tongue Music Publishing has announced the worldwide signing of New Zealand indie pop-rock band, There’s A Tuesday. The band’s debut EP, Dance With Me Before We Cry was release in 2020, which launched them into their own New Zealand headline tour and multiple shows across the festival circuit. FLOWING INTO A NEW PUBLISHING DEAL: River House Artists, in partnership with Sony Music Publishing Nashville, recently signed rising country music singer-songwriter Grant Gilbert to a worldwide publishing deal. The Texas-native has gained prominence within the country music scene over the last few due to his work performing with country star Josh Abbott, which led to his 2019 EP Loud and Clear, featuring his successful single “Held On To.” Recently, Gilbert announced plans to tour throughout Texas and the southeast, where he will perform hits off his March 2021 EP Trouble Like Us, including the popular single “I Don’t Wanna Be That Guy.”

A JAW DROPPING MOMENT IN IRELAND: Thriving, Dublin, Ireland-based artist management firm Jawdropper Management tell A&R Worldwide that they have launched their new record label Jawdropper Records, which will be distributed by Ingrooves Music Group. Jawdropper Management currently have artists signed to label and publishing deals with Universal Music Group, Columbia Records (Germany), RCA Records (US), BMG, Kobalt and Sony Music Publishing with clients including Robert Grace, modernlove, 1000 Beasts, Crybabyamy, Columbia Mills and Dani Larkin. The management company was founded by veteran Irish manager John Glennon, who teamed up with Maya Cullen Petrovic in 2018, when she became a business partner in the firm.

Danish, alternative rock poet IAMJJ joins Baker Grace, the rising alt-pop star from New Jersey, for the re-imagination of his grandiose hit “A Different Kind of Blues.” The original version was first released on IAMJJ’s debut album back in 2018 and became an eSports anthem in Turkey. The 2021 version of “A Different Kind of Blues” is an exciting match between IAMJJ’s Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash inspired vocals with the angelic, airy and ethereal voice of Baker Grace. The New Jersey native singer and songwriter entered the music business at only 14.
